When you think of entrepreneurship, what comes to mind? Perhaps people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, and companies like Airbnb and Uber?
Innovators like these in the tech space certainly deserve all the press they receive. Tech entrepreneurs and tech platforms are changing virtually every aspect of our lives, including the way we do business and interact with one another.
In the last 5-10 years, the rise in entrepreneurship has seen the concept of entrepreneurship become almost synonymous with tech. In my opinion, equating entrepreneurship with tech is problematic for three reasons:
First, across the board industries have numerous problems which are ripe for disruption, which do not require technological solutions. If we kept our focus on technological solutions alone, many of these other innovations would go untapped.
Second, the exaggerated focus on tech gives the false impression that other types of entrepreneurship are of less value. People with skillsets that lie outside technology shouldn’t think that they don’t have anything to contribute in terms of innovation and disruption. By celebrating entrepreneurialism outside the tech space, we can play a part in making sure that talented people with the skills to create change without tech, do so.
Third, the notion that entrepreneurship is synonymous with tech is misleading. It’s simply not true. Entrepreneurship is a way of thinking. It’s a mindset. It’s not confined to one industry or another, and it does not have to be executed in one particular way. It’s about spotting a gap in the market, seeing that things can be done differently, and capitalising on those opportunities. Granted, there are innumerable problems that can be solved with tech solutions. But don’t be fooled, there are countless problems that can be solved with non-tech solutions too.
I hope entrepreneurship in the tech space continues to transform industries for the better. And of course the attention this area receives is well-earned. But if you are someone without a tech background, and you see a problem that needs solving, don’t be disheartened. A non-tech solution might be just what’s needed.
